A man has been charged with aggravated break and enter after a woman was struck with a 30cm sword during a break and enter at West Kempsey.

Officers from Mid North Coast Police District have been investigating the incident, reported to have happened about 1am last Wednesday, when a man entered a home unit in Leith Street, as the residents slept.

A 30-year-old woman challenged the man, and sustained a laceration when she was struck on the back of the left leg with the weapon. The man then fled the scene.

The woman was treated by NSW Ambulance paramedics but did not require hospitalisation.

Inquiries were initiated and about 2.30am on Saturday, police were involved in a pursuit with a white utility through South Kempsey and West Kempsey.

A 20-year-old man was arrested at a home in West Kempsey after a police dog tracked a scent from the abandoned vehicle.

He was taken to Kempsey Police Station where he was charged with

  • Aggravated enter dwelling while armed
  • Use offensive weapon with intent to commit indictable offence, and
  • Stalk/intimidate intend fear physical etc harm.

He was refused bail and appeared in Port Macquarie Bail Court.

The man, who is from West Kempsey, has been again refused bail and is due to appear in Kempsey Local Court on Monday.
