Squally winds and rain are set to batter Victoria in the afternoon, with a severe weather warning in place for parts of the state.

A cold front will bring strong wind gusts and rain across Victoria on Wednesday but coastal and alpine areas will get the worst of it, Bureau of Meteorology senior forecaster Dean Stewart said.

"It will be quite squally right across the state" Mr Stewart said.

There would also be strong winds and showers in Melbourne with some thunderstorm activity in the outer southeastern suburbs, he said.

"(There will be) squally winds and some quite intense showers during that period between 4pm and 6pm."

The Mornington Peninsula could get thunderstorm activity, with the outer eastern and southern suburbs also.

Gusts of between 90 to 100km/h are expected to batter coastal and alpine areas, he said, with a severe weather warning in place for damaging winds.
