This week is Homelessness awareness week. The 2016 Bureau of Census figures show that despite steady economic growth in Australia, homelessness increased by 14% between the 2011 and 2016 censuses, with 116,427 people being homeless every night in Australia.

“In Cairns, estimates reveal that 4000 people are homeless or at severe risk of homelessness,” CHHN Chair Donna-Maree O’Connor says.

A NEW exhibition in Cairns will bring homelessness to the forefront as part of this year’s nationalHomelessness Week awareness campaign.

Titled, Our Journeys – Homelessness to Housing, the exhibition displays the work of artists with a lived experience of homelessness, depicting their stories and their journeys to housing.

The exhibition launches Wednesday 7 August from 10am – 2pm in the Tank 4 Gallery and runs until 18 August.

We went to Youthlink and spoke to three locals Shinyata, Telli and Ursula who have art in the exhibition and they spoke to us about how they found themselves homeless.
