Small Works From A Big Place Hits Central Victoria

Central Victoria hosts ‘small works from a BIG PLACE': a visual arts exhibition
that is a travelling feast of miniature art works, from a collective of Central
Victorian artists.

Curated and presented to a high standard, this exhibition is showcasing the work of
over 100 artists. It will ‘pop up’ at different destinations along the historical railway
line from Melbourne to Bendigo from 8th November to the 10th December and then
again in the first quarter of 2019 in Bendigo and Castlemaine.

As part of the exhibition, organisers are running a “Find Your Art, Find Your
Artist” campaign.

“We’re taking art to people where they live, to broaden awareness of the local
artistic talent and encourage the buying of local art,” says local organiser Karen
Corr. “With Christmas ahead, it’s an opportunity to buy real and handmade.”

The general public are encouraged to “find your art find your artist” by visiting the
exhibition, finding the artwork they like, and contacting local artists via

Artists represented cover a broad range of backgrounds and art forms:
Mari B-Li Donni is a multi-disciplined visual artist and art project co-ordinator who
works predominantly in ceramics, but also alternates between photography,
painting, sculpture and installation work.

“I spent many years working with community groups in creating projects that
focused on self-expression and inclusion while at the same time extending
the ‘art vibe’ outside of the City of Greater Bendigo. My drive and passion is
to see the outcome of what can eventuate from pushing the boundaries
whilst striving for uniqueness.”

Stephen Korp is a proud Wemba Wemba man and has been painting for 2 years
now. One of his recent paintings “The Black Saturday painting” was inspired by the
devastating events of Saturday 7th February 2009.

He describes his experience in the fires: “During this time, I was employed as a firefighter and was travelling home after a week away fighting fires in North East Victoria and was redirected to
Redesdale. For the next month after, I (along with many others) tirelessly
worked on the fires.”

“The project is made possible by support from great partners” says Karen Corr.
They are: the Australian Government’s Building Better Regions Fund; City of Greater
Bendigo and Macedon Ranges Shire Council. It is also supported by many other
local organisations including V/Line, Mount Alexander Shire, La Trobe University
and Bendigo Marketplace.

“Many artists would like opportunities to sell more work and grow their arts
business practice” says Sharon Seyd, Project Director at Jumpleads NFP. “That’s why
we created Pop Up Art; it supports artists to leverage individual effort into collective
initiatives that share resources for exhibition, presentation, marketing,
communications, and distribution of their work.”
