City of Kalgoorlie-Boulder chief executive John Walker hopes the decision to temporarily close two pitches at Ray Finlayson Sporting Complex will help resolve ongoing turf issues once and for all.

The $20 million Royalties for Regions complex began to face issues not long after opening in March 2017.

The Goldfields Soccer Association chose to move senior games to other venues after finding the grandstand field was not fit to play on.

Concerns have also been raised about the hard playing surfaces this week prompted City officials to close the main pitch in front of the grandstand as well as a pitch at the northern end of the complex.

John Walker says the safety of players is a primary concern, with his main aim being repairing the ground and avoid having any future problems.

The council aims to rejuvenate the main playing surface in time for the GSA season finals and a Perth Glory pre-season A-League soccer match scheduled for August. The other playing surface will undergo repair works to improve the drainage and is only likely to be reopened next year.

The issues at Ray Finlayson are believed to be due by incorrect sand being used as the top part of the underlying ground during construction.

The decision to close the pitches means that the rugby union have had to relocate to the Goldfields Oasis Recreation Complex to pave the way for soccer games to complete the season at Ray Finlayson.
