Four Mount Isa locals, Margaret Rogers, Kym Lynch, Dean Hanrahan, and Renee Hanrahan have completed Everest Base Camp after doing their training here in Mt Isa.

The group raised over $20,000 for Police Legacy Queensland, which supports the families of police officers who have passed away on duty or from terminal illness.

They completed their training around town, doing laps of Telstra hill and the hills around Ryan Road.

We just had to do the best we could with general fitness and hope for the best with altitude when we arrived! We did do quite a few laps of Telstra hill and the hills around Ryan Road.
The trek itself took 8 days to climb and 4 days to descend - over 128km. Throughout the trek, there is a total elevation gain of approximately 4500metres, with more than 2000m lost. The group would trek 6-8 hours a day.
For 12 days, Margaret, Kym, Dean and Renee endured tough conditions to give back to Police Legacy Queensland. The funds raised will support the education expenses of 67 children and will provide for an annual trip with other Legacy families. They raised $20,401.75 in total.

So, would they recommend the trek?

"I absolutely recommend the trek! If you have an opportunity to step out of your comfort zone, to take on new experiences, and grow…go and see what you are capable of!," said Renee.
