A man has been charged with assault causing death after another man died in hospital following an alleged assault on the Mid North Coast this week.

About 7am on Tuesday, a man was found unconscious in the driveway of a home on Excelsior Street at Nambucca Heads.

NSW Ambulance paramedics attended, transporting the 36 year old man to Coffs Harbour Hospital where it was determined he had suffered a fractured skull.

Police were notified and officers from Mid North Coast Police District commenced inquiries into how the man was injured.

Following inquiries, detectives arrested a 23 year old man in Riverside Drive at Nambucca Heads about 11am on  Wednesday.

He was taken to Macksville Police Station. Later in the day, Police were notified the older man had died in hospital just before 4pm.

The 23 year old man has now been charged with assault causing death and refused bail to appear at Port Macquarie Local Court today (Thursday 21 March 2019).
