The EPA has approved a 12-month trial producing hydrogen from brown coal at the Loy Yang Power Station.
Japanese company J Power has been awarded a research and development licence to test a combination of several existing technologies in small batches at a custom-made plant near Traralgon.
The consortium developing the trial will convert hydrogen to a liquid, export it to Japan by sea, and determine if it can be done on a commercial scale.
Lasting for a year, the trial is due to start in mid 2020 and use 160 tonnes of brown coal to produce 3 tonnes of hydrogen.
