The trial program for 10 non-lethal SMART drum lines to prevent shark attacks have caught a 4.6m great white shark near North Point at Gracetown yesterday, 8 weeks after the program was launched.

The drum lines were placed along an 11.5km stretch of coastline, about 500 meters offshore, with the aim of determining if the technology is effective in reducing attacks.

The technology uses hooks attached to bouys to bait sharks. When a shark is hooked, an alert is sent to a boat crew, who will tag the shark and tow it out to sea for release.

The caught shark was tagged by crew on board and was relocated a further 500m away from where it was caught 1km off shore.
