The recent rain has resulted in high mosquito larvae numbers.

Council will be carrying out helicopter spreading of S-Methoprene Mosquito Growth Regulator Sand this Thursday to stop the development of mosquito larvae,

Cr Fran Mann said aerial treatments would cover around 400 hectares of water in mosquito breeding areas.
“We are actively trying to reduce mosquito numbers in known hotspots.
“The treatments will help eliminate any mosquito breeding in these areas for around two weeks.

“The wetlands being targeted are located on the borders of Andergrove, Slade Point and Mackay Harbour, along Keeleys Road, Harbour Road and either side of Slade Point Road.”

While council works to control mosquito numbers in the region’s wetlands, Cr Mann reminded residents that they should also protect themselves from mosquitoes by cleaning up around their properties.

“Tip out any water in pot plant bases and containers, store items that can hold water in a dry spot or undercover, throw out any rubbish lying around and clean out your gutters to avoid mosquitoes breeding in your backyard,” she said.

“When outdoors make sure you wear long sleeves, trousers, a hat and use an effective insect repellent and try to avoid outdoor activities at dawn or dusk when mosquitoes are most active.

“It is also a good idea to make sure your window and door screens do not have any holes in them to prevent mosquitoes from entering your house.”
