About 190,000 Victorians will be hit with an $81 fine for failing to vote in last year's state election.

More than 250,000 people in March were issued a 'please explain' notice for their failure to vote and 60,000 provided a valid excuse.

People issued with the fine have 35 days to respond by either paying it, requesting an internal review or going to court, otherwise they risk an additional $25.10 penalty on top of the fine.
